THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE HOLY
[From the album Heartland Diaries]
This is the title of a book that marked my spiritual journey decades ago. The song itself was part of that album I mentioned in One Night in November. It represented the sense of eternity, beyond this earthly realm. It is the "face to face" reality of being and living in the divine presence. Something most religions or spiritual paths have in common.
It is said that we seek that which is seeking us. The home of Love is the destiny of our deepest longings. It reminds me of this description by St John of the Cross in his Dark Night of the Soul, where the night reveals the light of the seeking heart and leads him to complete surrender to the Beloved, his burning quest:
"Without light or guide,
Save that which burned in my heart.
This light guided me
More surely than the light of noonday
To the place where he (well I knew who!) was awaiting me
— A place where none appeared.
Oh, night that guided me,
Oh, night more lovely than the dawn,
Oh, night that joined Beloved with lover,
Lover transformed in the Beloved!
The song is an improvisation from start to finish, as I followed the sound of the synthesizer "guitar" to where it was leading me. By the same process, I also tried to render my interpretation of how a guitar player would play the instrument.
I wanted the sound to be singing without fear, dancing with gentle passion, and portray an embrace, an ushering into eternity by and with the Beloved, time without end. It was first title Eternity for this reason.
